Throughout the summer season CATF hosts various company events. These events are hosted to help build community and to make space to explore what Shepherdstown and the Eastern Panhandle have to offer.
Use this calendar to see pre-planned events. As we near the event date, Company Management will email full details to all in-town Guest Artists.
For events hosted off campus and not in walking distance, Company Management will assist in identifying transportation for those without a vehicle.
Moderate to Strenuous, 4.5 - 6.5 miles (7.2 - 10.5 km) round trip, 3 - 4 hours
The Maryland Heights Trail offers hikers the opportunity to see many aspects of Harpers Ferry NHP on one walk: spectacular scenery, geology, Civil War, industrial, and transportation history. The quickest route to the Maryland Heights Overlook is 4.5 miles round trip from the Master Armorer's House. The Stone Fort Loop trail adds another 2 miles.
How to Get There
Parking Location: Park at the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Visitor Center located at 171 Shoreline Drive, Harpers Ferry, WV.
Shuttle: From the Visitor Center, take the park's free shuttle system to Lower Town.
Trailhead Access: Walk across the Goodloe Byron Memorial Footbridge, cross the railroad trestle, go down the staircase to the C&O Canal Towpath, and cross Harpers Ferry Road to find the trailhead. [1, 2]
What to Expect on the Trail
Steep Climbs: The first section is a steady, steep uphill climb over dirt, roots, and rocks. Sturdy hiking boots and trekking poles are highly recommended to save your knees on the descent. [1, 2]
The Overlook: The main overlook provides a sweeping, panoramic view of the historic town of Harpers Ferry below. [1, 2]
History: If you choose to add the Stone Fort Loop, you will pass multiple 1862 Civil War artillery batteries and the Stone Fort itself. [1]
No Facilities: There are no restrooms or drinking water available on the trail. Bring plenty of water and plan to pack out all of your trash
